Above all powers, above all kings
Above all nature and all created things
Above all wisdom and all the ways of man
You were there before the world began

Above all kingdoms, above all thrones
Above all wonders the world has ever known
Above all wealth and treasures of the earth
There's no way to measure what you're worth

Crucified, laid behind the stone
You lived to die, rejected and alone
Like a rose, trampled on the ground
You took the fall and thought of me
Above all.

Sang this song at worship today and had some thoughts. He's above all right? We know that He's the Creator (for those who don't i hope someday you will) and therefore He is above anything that has been created.

Or is He?

Is He above what we hold in our hearts? What we want? What we long for? Is He above the grades, the friends, the money, the jobs, the fun, etc, etc, etc? We SAY He is - but the only way we know that for sure is when He asks us to lay it down. "_________ (fill in your name here), do you love me more than ______________ (fill in whatever's on your mind here)?"

Can you say yes? Will you say yes?

Knowing that He is intrisically above everything we conceive is very different from living such that He truly is - as i mentioned before, the greatest distance in the world is the one between the head and the heart. Hence, worship isn't the 45-min or hour-plus-plus session you have at regular scheduled dates/times - it's the 70-odd years that you have. Yeah you heard me right - worship is your life. Use it.

"Our lives are God's gift to us, what we make out of it is our gift back to God."

The small problem with that song is the last line of the chorus. The song is great at lifting Jesus "above all", but in the last line it lifts us above all, saying that Christ died thinking of us above all else, when really his primary aim was to glorify the Father.

yeah i see that...i kinda like to think of it as a re-exhortation that He is indeed above all, and hence detach it from the previous phrase, though i know what you mean..had a problem with that before too..
